About the Boston Bruins

Something had to give. The Boston Bruins faced the Vancouver Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals. The Bruins hadn’t won a championship in 39 years and a Canadian team hadn’t won a Stanley Cup since 1993. The odd series went a full seven games—the Bruins were shut out twice but still outscored the Canucks 19-8. The first six games of the series were won by the home team but the Bruins broke through in Game 7 to grab a 4-0 road win. Tim Thomas was named the series’ MVP and Patrice Bergeron scored the series-winning goal.With the victory, the Bruins snapped their nearly four-decade long championship drought and captured their sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history. As of 2011, the Bruins have the fourth most championships of any team in the National Hockey League and the second most of any team in America (only the Detroit Red Wings have more).

The Bruins are one of the National Hockey League’s “Original Six” teams. Thanks to entering the league in 1924, the Bruins are the oldest NHL team in America and the third oldest overall. The Bruins joined the league with another expansion team called the Montreal Maroons. Hall of famer and hockey pioneer, Art Ross, was hired to run the team. He would shepherd the Bruins for the next three decades, guiding them to ten first place finishes and three Stanley Cups. Today, the Bruins call TD Garden their home ice. They are aligned in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference along with the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Some of the big-time Boston Bruins over the years include Ray Bourque, Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Cam Neely, and Johnny Bucyk.
