In mid-July of 2008, on a flight to California, the then-New England Revolution general manager, Craig Tornberg, confronted a man exiting the plane’s lavatory that was completely naked. The GM told the exposed traveler to get back in the bathroom and put some clothes on. After saying something strange, the bare passenger obliged. A few minutes later, after he had put his clothes back on, the man rushed an emergency exit and tried to open the door. Tornberg and two other members of the team quickly subdued the man and held him down while a flight attendant bound his arms. The plane was diverted to Oklahoma City where the man was taken to a mental facility. The Revolution were back in the air an hour later. Unfortunately for their fans, the heroics shown thousands of feet in the air have not been duplicated on the pitch. As of 2012, the Revs have finished runner-ups of the MLS Cup four times. The only hardware the franchise has won is the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2008 North American SuperLiga.

The New England Revolution began play in 1996 and are one of the ten original Major League Soccer teams. The franchise is owned by Robert Kraft who also owns the New England Patriots of the NFL. Both teams play their home games at Gillette Stadium. The venue is located in Foxborough, Massachusetts which is about 20 miles from both downtown Boston and downtown Providence. The team has three main supporter’s clubs: the Midnight Riders, the Rebellion, and the Rev Army. The groups assemble in the north stands of Gillette Stadium in an area nicknamed “The Fort.” The team’s main rivals are the New York Red Bulls. Prominent Revolution players over the years include Alexi Lalas, Clint Dempsey, Avery John, Jay Heaps, and Taylor Twellman.
