Four major supporters groups back D.C. United. La Barra Brava, Spanish for “The Brave Fans,” try to bring a South American flare to United home games. La Norte, named because the group sits in the north stands, is known for its large drums and its seemingly endless supply of streamers. “District Ultras” bring large, customize banners to every home game. And lastly, The Screaming Eagles, one of the most famous supporters groups in all of the MLS, are known for their singing and chanting. If any Major League Soccer club needs four fan clubs, it’s D.C. United. They are one of the most successful MLS clubs of all-time and widely regarded as the league’s flagship franchise. Throughout their history, United has won the MLS Cup, the U.S. Open Cup, and the Supporters’ Shields multiple times. The franchise has also won international competitions including the 1998 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.
D.C. United is one of Major League Soccer’s ten charter members. They play their home games at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium located in D.C. along the banks of the Anacostia River. With a home venue that can seat more than 45,000 fans, United is annually one of the league’s top drawing teams. Imitating the naming conventions of clubs in the U.K., the franchise put the adjective “United” in their name. Their official nickname is “Black-and-Red” and it’s a reference to the colors of their home uniforms. The team’s main rivals are the New York Red Bulls. Every year the two teams compete for the Atlantic Cup. The most prominent players in D.C. United history include Jaime Moreno, Eddie Pope, Marco Etcheverry, and Dwayne De Rosario.
