About San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks won the President’s Trophy in 2008-2009. The award is given to the team with the most points in the regular season. In the NHL Playoffs, their first round opponents were the lowly Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks had the fewest points of any of the league’s 16 playoff teams. Even to casual puck fans the Ducks appeared to be nothing more than a slight bump on the Sharks’ road to the Stanley Cup Finals. However, someone forgot to tell the Ducks that. The eighth-seed defeated the highly-favored Sharks in six games. To add insult to injury, the Sharks were shutout twice. At the time, the Sharks were just the fourth President’s Trophy winner to be ousted in the first round. The postseason failure sums up the Sharks rather brief playoff history. The franchise has amassed nine seasons of 90 or more points, including six division titles, but as of 2011 they have yet to reach a Stanley Cup Finals.
The Sharks entered the National Hockey League in 1991 as an expansion team. They are the Bay Area’s second NHL team. The California Golden Seals were in the league from 1967 through 1976. The Sharks reached the postseason in just their third season and since then have missed the playoffs a mere three times (as of 2011). The team is aligned in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference with the Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, and Phoenix Coyotes. Their home arena is the HP Pavilion at San Jose which is located on West Santa Clara Street. The venue is sometimes called “The Shark Tank†or “The Tank.†Some of the San Jose Sharks most notable players include Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, Owen Nolan, Jonathan Cheechoo, and Joe Pavelski.
