Even though he didn’t end his career with the Edmonton Oilers, the franchise is synonymous with Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as hockey’s greatest player. The Oilers acquired the “Great One” in 1978 when they were still apart of the World Hockey Association and a year before the franchise joined the National Hockey League. Once Gretzky reached the NHL he rewrote the record books. In fact, he retired in 1999 the holder of more than 60 NHL records. He left the game as the NHL’s all-time leading point scorer, was named the most valuable player nine times, and was the first NHL player to score more than 200 points in a season (he accomplished that feat four times). Gretzky also led the Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988. In August of 1988, Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. The move sent shockwaves through the league and the country of Canada. Despite losing the biggest star professional hockey had ever seen, the Oilers rebounded and won the 1990 Stanley Cup.

Besides Gretzky, the Oilers of the mid-1980s starred many quality players including Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, and Mark Messier. After two unsuccessful trips to the conference finals, the Oilers languished through the rest of the 1990s and early 2000s. During this time they were either knocked out of the playoffs early or didn’t make it at all. Also during this era, the Dallas Stars ended the Oilers’ postseason aspirations five straight times. The Oilers returned to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006 but fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in seven games. The team plays their home games at Rexall Place and are aligned in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference with the Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, and Vancouver Canucks. The Edmonton Oilers main rivals are the Flames. Games between the two clubs are affectionately called “The Battle for Alberta.”
