Madonna Biography

There are a few artists over the decades who have needed only a singular name to distinguish them. Like Liberace and Cher before her, such was the case with Madonna.

Hailing from Michigan, Madonna headed to New York City in 1977 to pursue a dance career and work with legendary choreographer Alvin Ailey. But, then, music came calling and lured her into the Breakfast Club, a local band. She started as the group's drummer, but eventually stepped out front as the singer.

When the Breakfast Club had run its course, Madonna and then-boyfriend Stephen Bray splintered off into Emmy before just pushing Madonna as a solo artist. That's where they struck gold and got a contract with Sire Records circa 1982.

Within months, Madonna was a hit on the club circuit with “Everybody,” "Physical Attraction," and "Holiday." And she hadn't even released a full album yet.

That self-titled effort dropped in '83 and even more hits came with a wide release od “Holiday,” “Borderline,” “Lucky Star,” and others. And so began Madonna's string of 17 consecutive Top 10 hits.

A consummate entertainer, Madonna then wanted to tackle acting and did wo with Desperately Seeking Susan in 1984 just prior to the release of her second album, Like a Virgin. With that pair of projects, Madonna was unstoppable, especially when it came to music videos. She supported the singles – “Like a Virgin,” “Material Girl,” and the number one “Crazy for You” – with a world tour while the film also did gonzo business.

When the number one True Blue album came in 1986, three more chart-topping hits were spawned – “Live to Tell,” "Papa Don't Preach," and "Open Your Heart."

Back in Hollywood, Madonna's luck wasn't as good with Shanghai Surprise which she made with her then-husband Sean Penn. The tumble continued with her next film, Who's That Girl?, which also stalled. To prove her mettle as an actress, Madonna took her fight to Broadway, appearing in David Mamet's Speed the Plow.

When she returned to the music front, she did so with much controversy with 1989's Like a Prayer. Four more Top 10 hits came her way – the album's title track, as well as "Express Yourself," "Cherish," "Keep It Together." The Blonde Ambition Tour blanketed the globe in 1990, captured by the 1991 documentary Truth or Dare.

And then came “Vogue,” a massive number one hit that continues to be one of Madonna's calling cards. (She opened her 2012 Super Bowl performance with it.) The Immaculate Collection culled all of her hits together with two new tracks, “Justify My Love” and “Rescue Me.”

A couple more acting projects helped her overcome the Hollywood jinx. Both Dick Tracy and A League of Their Own did well. Though Madonna only had small parts in each, she contributed the number one single, "This Used to Be My Playground," to A League of Their Own.

Branching out into the publishing world, Madonna compiled a collection of erotic photographs of herself and others in Sex. Though it didn't sell all that well, the accompanying record, 1992's Erotica, did.

With 1994's Bedtime Stories, Madonna took it down a notch and saw only one chart-topping single as a result with “Take a Bow.” Then, after much lobbying, Madonna was cast as Evita Peron in a film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical. Madonna was awarded a Golden Globe for her portrayal.

Another artistic shift came in 1997 when Madonna partnered with William Orbit on Ray of Life and then on Music in 1999. Both electronic-leaning albums did solid business for the superstar. Her next step into film, in Swept Away, wasn't on such solid footing.

American Life, her 2003 musical contribution, also failed to gain any traction. But Madonna's first venture into children's books, The English Roses, turned her luck around yet again.

Madonna kept that momentum going in 2005 with the number one Confessions on a Dance Floor. Her Re-Invention world tour was captured with 2006's DVD/CD package I'm Going to Tell You a Secret. The Confessions Tour was also put to plastic for release in '07.

New collaborators came in 2008, with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, and the Neptunes joining Madonna for her Hard Candy. Her most successful world tour to date, Sticky & Sweet, was documented in another DVD/CD set in 2010.

After several decades of success, Madonna parted ways with Warner Bros. and teamed up with Live Nation in a 360 deal that brings her records, tours, and merch under one umbrella.

Madonna's first efforts under the new banner were unveiled in early 2012 at the Super Bowl half-time show. The performance included the lead single, “Give Me All Ur Luvin',” from her MDNA set. A massive world tour was slated to fill the rest of the year and flow into 2013.

A Review of Madonna's Last Tour (2006 tour)

"The show was fantastic!! Exactly what you'd expect from Madonna. Her stage was unbelievable. Out of the hundreds of other concerts I've been to her stage completely made me say Wow! There's nothing better than going to a concert and having everyone standing up the entire time dancing, from the 20 to 50 something year old, to your husband next to you giving his very best effort. It really felt like you were at a some funky cool night club.

Everyone could not stop talking about how amazing she looked. She really did. Not just because she's 47. Her body is in the best shape she's ever been in. Talk about energy level. She made me tired just watching her dance around like she did. Her dancers were unbelievable too.

I knew she'd play more of her newest songs. The only older songs she sang were "Lucky Star", "Like a Virgin" and "Live to Tell". The first two had an updated music version, Lucky Star was more dance and Like a Virgin was slower, sultry version. "Live to tell" was sung just like the old version, and while she performed she showed, on the huge awesome stage screens, pictures of little kids from Africa who are orphans or dying from Aids. When she first started to sing it, numbers started to tally on the top screen. It scrolled superman fast... by the time the song ended it was up past 5 million (0 to 5m)

The show lasted one hour and forty minutes. She doesn't have an opening act, she takes no breaks, and there is no encore. And rumor has it that she doesn't like air conditioning. Which could have certainly been proof that night. It was completely off throughout the building... or could have just been broken. Who knows. I'm just so glad I was able to experience her show, finally, after having waited since I was like 14 years old to see her in concert.

She's certainly a music icon of my time. Worth every penny."
